    A Brief Profile: Periyar University was formed on 17.09.1997 (119th Birth Anniversary of the great rationalist, Periyar E.V. Ramasamy Avl.) under the provisions of the Periyar University Act 1997 (Act 45 of 1997) passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and assented by the President of India on 6th August 1997 in the name of Periyar a great social reformer of Tamil Nadu. The University was formed to cater the educational needs of the people in Salem, Namakkal and Dharmapuri districts. These three districts are backward not only economically, but also educationally and socially.

    The Government of Tamil Nadu have allotted Rs.10 crores for the construction of buildings. The University is located in an area of 57.91 hectares. The administrative buildings and Science block have been constructed.

    Aims of the University:
    The University aims at developing the knowledge at various fields in consonance to the inscription (Arivaal Vilaiyum Ulagu) made in its emblem. Provision of qualitative education taking into account the present and future scientific development and provision of opportunities to all sections of the society for higher education etc are the prime motto of the University. Further formulation of syllabus considering the changes in the educational needs at national level and international level, looking after the welfare of the students, teachers and the public are also aims of the University.

    Administration of the University:
    The Vice-Chancellor shall be the Principal Executive Officer of the University. The authorities of the University shall be the Senate, the Syndicate, the Standing Committee on Academic Affairs, the Faculties, the Boards of studies, the Finance Committee, the Planning Board and such other authorities as may be declared by the Statutes to be authorities of the University.

    The role of the Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Directors of various education departments and University - Industry interaction shall be made known to the public to mitigate the problems/issues in the related areas of higher education.
